Wood Skills Demo
Beyond 90 degrees
Students will observe various techniques for cutting curves and angles.
Take Notes!!! We will be covering a lot of material very quickly and you will not be able to remember all of it. Even if you are familiar with a process and/ or material, each fabrication shop has its own safety procedures and ways of doing things. Our shop is no different. If done well, notes you take during the demos will provide you with an invaluable resource to use as you begin fabricating your own pieces during this class and future classes.
Demos
- Band Saw
- Lathe
- Angled edges on the table saw (blade tilt)
- Angled cross-cuts on the table saw (sliding cross-cut table)
- Angled rip cuts on the table saw (taper jig)
Approval Required
Although you have learned some of these tools and techniques fabricating models made from foam. Wood is different. It is more dense but also has knots, grain, and other structural anomalies. Table saws are designed primarily to make 90 degree cuts. The use of jigs and other accessories makes cutting angles possible, but some of the dangers of these tools are not intuitively obvious. Therefore you must get specific permission when using these techniques and tools.
